Chapter Nine

As soon as the guard escorted Jenny out of the food truck, Maggie picked up her phone and called Ruby. She related what had just happened.

“What on earth?” Ruby said.

“This is just all so weird.”

“I am about fifteen minutes out,” Ruby told her. “I will be there as fast as I can be.”

Maggie hung up her phone. The sun was beginning to set. The lights above the fairground cast a glow all around. A few vendors wandered over to her window and sampled the mini donuts she had set on the two platters. She watched for the security guard to return.

Ruby texted her a few minutes later and let her know that she was in the parking lot. By the time Ruby made it to the food truck, the crowd around them began to swell.

“Do you have more of those little donuts?” people asked. Maggie hurried to push another batch through the donut machine. Ruby jumped right in without a word and began frying the latest batch of yeast donuts. She glazed the regular donuts and started a third batch of dough.

At last, the crowd thinned out a bit. “Imagine what it’s going to be like in the morning,” Ruby said.

“Right, and we aren’t even serving coffee right now,” Maggie said. She placed the newest mini donuts into the cinnamon and sugar bag and shook them until they were completely covered.

“Have you let Brett know about Jenny’s visit?” Ruby asked.

Maggie shook her head. “I haven’t even had the chance to do it yet,” she said. “I’m not sure that it’s necessary to report it to the police, though. I did inform fair security. Maybe that’s sufficient for now.”

Ruby set the rising dough to the side and took a seat in the small sitting area. “I think we both know that isn’t so,” she said. “Brett ought to be informed about it, given the strange behavior of the women the other morning, and then one of them ending up dead.”

“Yeah, I guess I should let him know,” Maggie agreed. She glanced at her phone and considered texting Brett.

“We have another customer,” Ruby whispered. Maggie looked out the window and smiled. The security guard had returned. Maggie opened the window and greeted him with a smile.

“I assume from the matching shirts that your friend there is supposed to be in there with you.” He smiled.

“This is my business partner, Ruby Cobb,” Maggie said. She turned back to the guard. “I didn’t catch your name.”

“I’m Brooks Macklin,” he said. “And you’re Maggie, right?”

Maggie nodded. “Why don’t you tell me what you’d like, and we’ll put something together for you?”

Brooks looked around and settled on a half-dozen chocolate glazed. Maggie added other assorted donuts and handed the bag to him. “It’s on the house,” she said with a smile.

“Well, thank you,” Brooks said.

“Thank you for helping me out with an awkward situation,” Maggie said.

Ruby leaned in the window. “Do you have any idea why that woman insisted on coming in the food truck? Is that normal behavior for her?”

Brooks shook his head.
